What are
the benefits of studying abroad? Michael Thomas, associate
dean for Drury’s international programs, says, “Students who
study abroad greatly benefit from personal growth and development. They
are in a new environment that forces you to grow. There’s a broadening
of perspective. Having a cultural experience outside of your own can be
life-changing.”
How much can it cost? Typically, the cost of a semester
abroad is comparable to a semester at Drury. Some programs have added
fees, and you must consider the cost of airfare and passports. Drury students
who study abroad can apply for short-term loans, although many plan to
save from the start of their college education, Thomas says. Scholarships
and financial aid typically follow the student.
When should I study abroad? Students typically study abroad during
or immediately after their junior year of college. However, there has
been a movement to start studying abroad during the sophomore year so
that students can participate in internships during the summer between
their junior and senior years.
How many U.S. students study abroad? In 2006, the most
recent numbers available from the Institute of International Education,
205,983 students studied abroad.
Does Drury University have trips for alumni? Yes. Drury alumni
trips will visit Italy this fall; and in the past they have gone to Russia.
Will I have to get vaccinations? The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention have a site
that allows you to research which vaccinations you may need while traveling
abroad. The CDC encourages all travelers to plan for their vaccinations
at least 4 to 6 weeks before a trip to have maximum protection.
How do I get my passport? It currently takes 16 to 18 weeks to
obtain a passport from the U.S.
Department of State. You must go to one of the more than 9,000 passport
acceptance locations across the nation. You will be required to supply
a passport photo, your passport application and your certified birth certificate,
which will prove you are a U.S. citizen. A copy of your birth certificate
is not acceptable; it must be certified. For more information on documentation,
the U.S. Department of State has a detailed explanation
of what you will need.
Where might it be dangerous to travel? The U.S. Department of
State keeps track of potential dangerous places worldwide. You can find
the full list at U.S.
Travel Advisories.
