In high school, Shannon Huett knew she wanted to travel. She didn't know exactly what it meant. Sure, she'd visit other countries, see the sights, eat the food. She didn't realize, when she packed her bags for Australia two years ago, joining the 45 percent of Drury University students who study in other lands, that it would alter her forever. It was more than suitcases, more than plane tickets, more than a sightseeing trip in a different country. It was learning the ropes to go through Customs. It was the confidence to take a day trip alone. It was learning Aussie Rules Football. It was learning that Aussies have political blinders, just like Americans, and can argue about foreign policy vehemently without figuring out that the person they are arguing with is on the same side. It was learning once she left, the culture would become a part of her. And that alteration would occur after each visit to each new land, each time. more>
